Qualifications and Experience

Dr Paul James Ainsworth MBchB, FRACS (Urol)

Dr Ainsworth is a fully qualified Urologist whose areas of interest include prostate, kidney and bladder cancer, incontinence, complex stone disease, endoscopic and laparascopic urology. He also has received extensive training in the USA in penile prosthesis and male incontinence. He also offers a broad range of general urological services.

Dr Ainsworth attended Scots College, Wellington, New Zealand and undertook his medical training at Otago University, Dunedin, New Zealand (MBchB Otago 1992). He began his surgical training at the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle in 1996. After completing 5 years of general surgical training he commenced Urology training in 2001 and was awarded his Fellowship in Urology in 2003 (FRACS Urol)  graduating with the Best Registrar Award for 2003. He has trained at the John Hunter Hospital Newcastle, Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick Sydney and Orange Base Hospital. He completed his training as a Fellow at the University Hospital of Cardiff, Wales, UK. There he received subspecialty training in laparoscopy, pelvic oncology and complex urological reconstruction surgery.

Dr Ainsworth has private consulting Rooms in Hamilton, Newcastle and in Maitland. He operates privately at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital, Lingard Private Hospital and Maitland Private Hospital. He admits public patients to the John Hunter Hospital, the Royal Newcastle Centre, Belmont Public Hospital and Maitland Public Hospital. He also participates in consulting at public patient clinics at the John Hunter Hospital.

Dr Ainsworth was Head of Department of Urology at the John Hunter Hospital from 2013 -2016.

Dr Ainsworth is involved in clinical research and audit in areas of prostate cancer, stone management and incontinence.

Dr Ainsworth is passionate about providing patients with the highest standard of urological care. He is married with 3 children and when time allows enjoys sailing, golf and rugby.
